Brainspotting Therapy for women in Franklin and online across Tennessee

Heal stuck patterns and reconnect to life.
You can’t “think” your way to healing

Brainspotting can help you narrow your focus and resolve the conflict in your mind.

  • Brainspotting is a brain-body mindfulness-based therapeutic approach that is evidence-based. It focuses on processing distressful emotions. It does this by targeting the parts of the brain where memory and emotion are stored and the parts of the brain involved with regulation. By accessing these parts in a session, we actually help resolve the ‘stuckness’ you feel and process the emotions. The result is you feel better and feel more regulated.

So, Rather than trying to think or reason your way through something that’s bothering you, Brainspotting helps you get to the source, and process the emotion for a much more efficient and powerful experience.

  • Brainspotting therapy is performed by a trained clinician as part of an overall treatment plan. During the process, we identify what you would like to work on.

Here is what you can expect in a typical brainspotting session:

    • Using a pointer, I will guide your gaze across your field of vision.

    • When the eyes reach a brainspot, I’ll make note of its location.

    • Using the brainspots identified, you’ll notice the event in a deeper and more detailed manner than normally possible.

    • Through gentle guided sessions, specific memories can be reprocessed in a safe environment.

    • Traumatic emotions and memories can be fully released, supporting the self-healing process.

  • Brainspotting Therapy is a brain-body therapy and is known as a “bottom up” therapy, which aims to release the physical stress in the body, thereby leading to release the emotional stress in the body as well.

Brainspotting therapy is a bit more fluid and doesn't have a set standard protocol therefore it is an intervention that doesn’t require the same time commitment as some other techniques. We can explore what triggers you’ve experienced and get into brainspotting fairly quickly.

Common questions about Brainspotting Therapy:

  • The therapy was developed in 2003, and the current studies show that Brainspotting is effective in helping people process distressing memories. In addition, the theoretical mechanisms of Brainspotting are well-grounded in scientific evidence, and detailed neurological explanations of the Brainspotting process have been discussed widely in the academic literature for decades (very similar to EMDR).

  • Some clients report experiencing relief in symptoms after just one session, but you should plan on it taking longer to achieve your goals. Duration of therapy is always a challenging predictor because our individual needs are so different. One benefit of brainspotting is that it’s more effective at getting to the root of where change occurs.

  • Yes, it can. It’s not uncommon for therapists to do Brainspotting virtually. If you are a resident of Tennessee, we can work together.

  • Both are evidence-based, studied for decades, and proven to be effective. They are both considered Brain-based therapy techniques, sometimes referred to as “power therapies,” that work to process unresolved emotions or experiences.

Where they differ is the approach or protocol and the client’s past experiences and needs. EMDR utilizes eye movements as a form of bilateral stimulation and includes eight phases of a protocol, while Brainspotting focuses the eye on a fixed gaze position and, at times, is more flexible.

As a clinical trained in both EMDR and Brainspotting, I’ll work with you to determine the best approach based on your needs.
