EMDR therapy may be a good fit for you if:
Your reactions to a situation don’t match what’s really happening
You’re having recurring flashbacks of interactions or feelings
You’re experiencing overwhelming emotions, but you’re not sure why
You recycle negative loops of not feeling good enough, not feeling worthy, or lack of confidence
You have some sort of sadness or anger, but you can’t shake it
EMDR can change the way you move through life.
WHAT IS EMDR?
EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. It is a brain-based technique that is evidence-based, has been clinically studied for decades, and has proven effective for multiple symptoms.
The goal is to reduce distress and negative beliefs associated with past overwhelming or traumatic experiences that are having a significant impact on a day-to-day basis. These negative beliefs and experiences are called “information.”
WHY DO I FEEL THIS WAY?
The “information” is stored in the brain’s memory networks. These networks contain memories, thoughts, images, emotions, and sensations. Under normal circumstances, we are capable of responding to and resolving “information”; however, sometimes, it is not adequately processed in the brain and becomes stored energetically in the body or frozen in time. To resolve it, it must be released or fully processed.
HOW DOES EMDR WORK?
EMDR resolves this inadequate “information” storage by forging new connections between the stuck information and more adaptive information. EMDR uses side-to-side eye movements or other bilateral stimulation to help engage adaptive information processing to resolve the disconnect. It’s basically categorizing the information in a more helpful way so you can move past it and continue to be impacted by it.
The entire process leverages a proven protocol that includes eight phases to identify problematic beliefs or experiences, reprocess them, and forge new future templates so you stop recycling old patterns.

Common questions about EMDR Therapy:
-
During a standard 50-minute session, we’ll start by uncovering what seems to be holding you back. You may know exactly what it is, but often, I find that my clients don’t have the full picture. Developing the full picture is a crucial point for treatment goals.
Once we have you in a safe, resourced state, we’ll move through the treatment plan by processing memories, feelings, beliefs, or events that keep you ‘charged’ and hijack how you receive information. We’ll do this using eye movements or pulsating tappers to engage both sides of your brain and begin the healing.
We’ll move slowly and intentionally as you work to create a new narrative for yourself. During the session, you don’t have to ‘do’ anything. I will ask you a short series of questions and begin the eye movements.

It’s a great question, and I wish I had a great answer, but the reality is every client’s experiences are so different there isn’t a way to average it out. I’ve worked with clients for a couple of months to a year. It depends on the impact of your experiences, how often you come to therapy, and how much work you’re willing to do at home.

According to the EMDR Research Foundation, more than 30 gold-standard studies have documented EMDR’s effectiveness over the last three decades. Though therapists previously used EMDR only for PTSD and trauma-related disorders, they now also use it to treat many other problems, including anxiety and depression. EMDR offers hope to people who have been struggling with fears and uncomfortable symptoms where coping skills and talk therapy haven't provided lasting relief.

The length of the session can vary based on what you need. EMDR can take place in a 50-minute session per week or a 100-minute session every other week. We can also schedule extended sessions, whatever fits your needs and supports your healing.
